Steelhead make fall runs in certain tributaries to the Great Lakes. Their movement patterns and habitats change with river conditions. To start, look for runs and bends in a highly diversified area of the river. Start fishing from the bank, covering the water on the inside bend closest to you. Make short casts first, working across the river gradually. Cover the head and tail ends of pools, too. If water is high, concentrate on slow-water spots. In low water, midstream sections of necks?where structure on both sides of the river pushes current toward midstream?are top spots. Fish with bottom and floating doughbait rigs baited with softbait nymphs, eggs, egg clusters, and small worms.
