David Dudley Wins Third FLW Tour Angler Of The Year Title
COLUMBIA, S.C. – Consistency is key to any title that encompasses an entire year, and Berkley pro David Dudley was just that. Dudley captured his third FLW Angler of the Year and his seventh career tournament win this past weekend on Lake Champlain.
Dudley joins fellow Berkley pro Clark Wendlandt (2009, 2000, 1997) as the only other FLW pro to win three AOY titles. However, Dudley is the only FLW angler to earn back-to-back AOY titles. Dudley also received $100,000 for the AOY title.
The Lynchburg, Va., native won his second 2012 FLW title, the first on Beaver Lake earlier this year, and a $100,000 plus a $25,000 in Ranger Cup bonus money for the tournament victory.
Fishing shorelines in Missisquoi Bay, Dudley caught his fish on a wacky-rigged worm, a Texas-rigged Berkley Havoc Bottom Hopper and a chatterbait tipped with a Berkley Havoc Rocket Craw. Most of his bites came in shallow water where he would change baits according to the habitat.
"I really have a ton of confidence in the baits that I throw," said Dudley. "The Berkley baits have been lights out this year. When I was targeting fish in the shallows, the drop shot seemed to be the biggest producer, but then the habitat would change so I had to match what changes I saw."
"I really just tried to focus throughout the week on the Champlain event," Dudley said. "I tried to keep AOY on the backburner and simply focus on each day of the event. I know there are a ton of guys breathing down my neck, and if I lose focus one of them will jump to the lead. I have to go out there and out work the other guys. I feel like I accomplished that today."
Dudley remains a dominant figure on the FLW Tour. This year Dudley has notched four top-15 finishes, two of which Dudley won. He has amassed seven tournament wins and 36 top-10 finishes in FLW Outdoors competition and won over $3 million during his 17-year career.
