FishSmart - Rockfish Recompression

Berkley Conservation Institute

Operation Deep Release! No one wants floaters…those deep water fish that are bloated from an expanded swim bladder and will die at the surface if just released there. This new video helps explain how to recompress these fish, which means releasing them at the depth that they were originally caught. The water pressure recompresses the gasses in the swim bladder and allows the fish to survive. Every fisherman needs to have recompression devices on their boat when going fishing for deep water species, some of which they might want to release. For more information go to www.fishsmart.org.
