When fishing vegetation it is always better to fish into or with the wind so your bait penetrates the grass easier. If you fish across, you get a bag in your line and your bait will not penetrate the grass.
Instead of using the standard heavy weight flipping technique in tough bite, heavy cover situations, try backing off the spot a casting distance away. Tie on a 3/16 oz. Mushroom head jig and a 7 Power Worm. Throw to the edge and just inside weed line letting the lure make its way slowly through the cover. Those fish cannot resist. Most anglers won't try this."
When sight fishing for bedding or any visible bass, always remember your first cast is the most important! If you don't catch the fish on the first cast you might have to use a different technique to catch the fish.
One key to successful fall fishing on natural lakes is targeting the edges of thick, green weedbeds. You can spot these edges where the vegetation grows almost to the surface. In deeper areas, use your sonar to find thicker clumps of grass.
I am a power fisherman. Power fishing is a broad term used to describe using reaction style lures to cover vast amounts of water. Included in this power fishing style, my favorite way to catch bass is skip pitching and swimming a jig. Skip pitching involves using a conventional reel and getting a jig to skip far back under cover. Swimming a jig involves slowly pumping a jig at various depths horizontally through the water column.
Docks and boat houses are important cover for bass, particularly when shoreline development has depleted natural cover. High-percentage spots depend on water depth and cover options. To tempt bites, flip or pitch jigs or softbaits like tubes, soft stickbaits, worms, or craws by pilings and into boat stalls.
Reservoir smallmouths often congregate close to shore along riprap and rocky breaks into deeper water during early spring. The rocky shallows warm early, drawing bait.
Spring means high water in most areas, due to snowmelt and high annual rainfall. And spring means movement for river bass. A plunge-pool below a dam is a classic wintering site. As water temperatures broach 50oF, smallmouths begin to wander downstream from a dam or upstream from a reservoir, toward spawning areas.
Winter is a fantastic time to catch big lake trout through the ice. This type of fishing often requires mobility as it can take quite a bit of searching to find active lakers. They can roam main-lake basins where they suspend in the water column to feed on open-water baitfish.
