Improved Clinch Knot - how to tie

The Improved Clinch knot is one of the most widely used fishing knots. It provides a good method of securing a fishing line to a hook, lure, or swivel. The improved version shown here includes an extra tuck under the final turn. It is commonly used to fasten the leader to the fly. Because it is harder to tie in heavier lines it is not recommended if you are using over 30lb test line.

Watch the video below for animated instructions on tying the Improved Clinch fishing knot.

4 Easy Steps for Tying the Improved Clinch Knot:

  1. Pass end of the line through the eye of the hook or swivel
  2. Pull about 6 inches of line through and double it back against itself. Twist five to seven times.
  3. Pass end of the line through the small loop formed just above the eye, then through the big loop just created. Be careful that the coils don’t overlap.
  4. Moisten and pull tag end and main line so that coiled line tightens against the eye. Trim excess.
