Berkley Team Wins World Walleye Championship

Berkley pro Johnnie Candle and partner Dave Noble pulled out a comeback win this past weekend at the World Walleye Championship in Praire Du Chein, Wis. Weighing in 34.94-pounds of walleye over the three day event, the duo rallied to pass, what seemed to be an insurmountable 21.09-pound first-day outing by another Berkley team of Kevin Dahl and Steve Stack.

"This was a great win for us," said Candle. "The first day total posted by Stack and Dahl was really amazing, but we just stuck with our game plan. The conditions were terrible on the Mississippi, but we continued to plug away and posted the victory."

Trailing by more than 7 pounds entering the second day of competition, Candle and Noble were the most consistent anglers. The team outlasted the nearest competitors by more than 6 pounds, winning them a prize of $25,200.

"We really have Berkley and Abu Garcia to thank for being a major sponsor of this event," said Candle. "One of the keys to our success was our line choice. We started fishing with 6-pound Berkley Trilene Fireline, and by the time the third day rolled around we were fishing 14-pound Fireline. With falling water levels, we changed lines to keep the bait in the strike zone longer."

The Berkley team waited out walleye that were moving up to feed on a rock bed. They made multiple casts to a single spot that produced most all their fish. Once they had their limit the pair would leave the area to fish other locations that they suspected held fish, which paid of with a few fish that upgraded their final totals.
